• Review:

I have an old friend whose life is just as hectic as mine. We rarely get to see each other but when we do get together we like to wine and dine at some of Atlanta's nicest restaurants. For our holiday date this year I wanted to venture somewhere classy and romantic. I was in the mood for something elegant. I desired candle lit tables, a calm and serene atmosphere and amazing food. My friend lives in The Vinings so I tried to pick a place that would be convenient and close. After a little bit of research I settled on Canoe , a widely talked about and well regarded restaurant by Atlanta food critics. Nestled along the banks of the Chattahoochee River, Canoe is a sexy and sophisticated restaurant that is perfect for anniversary celebrations or special occasions. My guest and I thought we were outsmarting the common Atlantan by picking a Tuesday for our date, but low and behold Canoe is just as busy during the week as it is on the weekends. I would highly suggest making a reservation before you visit. I appreciated the complementary valet service when we arrived and the spacious bar area that features comfortable leather seats and small tables to parties waiting to be seated in the main dining room. Once our name was called, my date and I were escorted to a well decorated table and met by a charming server who helped my guest and I sort through the various items on the menu. Now, if you plan on visiting Canoe I highly suggest that you keep an open mind to the type of food that is served. If you know you are a picky eater who doesn't like to try new things, I wouldn't suggest Canoe because the menu doesn't feature your "traditional items". Even I was slightly overwhelmed when I first glanced at the menu. I didn't really know where to start but my date and I both agreed that we loved seafood so we opted to start our meals with the House Smoked Salmon with a Crispy Potato Cake and Vermont Goat’s Cheese appetizer ($12). I was impressed at how flavorful the dish was and the chef’s creative presentation aided in my approval and recommendation of this starter. When our appetizer arrived our server brought along a large assortment of fresh breads (see picture below). After a few cocktails my guest and I were ready to order our main dish. I took a leap of faith and on my server’s recommendation tried the Slow Roasted Carolina Rabbit with Swiss Chard served with Bacon Ravioli, Sweet Potato Hash and Candied Garlic Sauce ($25). Now I know, the thought of “rabbit” may scare some, but the entrĂ©e was delicious and the meat was tender and flavorful. I didn’t regret my choice at all. A few other items on the menu I was interested in trying were the Roasted Rack of Lamb with Black Olive Bread Pudding and Caramelized Fennel ($29) ,and the Grilled New York Strip Steak with Black Truffle Buttermilk Potato Puree and Spicy Escarole ($30). As I previously stated this restaurant is really a class act and is a place I suggest for special occasions. The menu items are pricy so this isn’t your typical “1st date” venue, but more so a place you would take a date for an evening filled with elegance and romance.
